Keeping the Pulse of the Consumer and COVID-19 

COVID-19 has just begun and already the business impact is felt. Now, more than ever, it is vital that businesses connect and understand their consumers – what they are going through, what they need, and how they feel.

At ENGINE, we have the real-time pulse of the consumer, today, and always. Throughout this pandemic, we will be offering weekly insights from identifying important data points and trends from the voice of the consumer.

These Online CARAVAN® omnibus surveys were conducted March 13-15 and March 16-17, 2020. Approximately 1000 adults selected from opt-in panels were surveyed each time. The results are also weighted to U.S. Census data to be demographically representative.

Key Findings as of March 15, 2020:

– While most Americans (78%) are concerned about COVID-19, a not insubstantial minority of 22% say they are unconcerned.
– Boomers are most like to be concerned, Gen Z least.
– Democrats are more likely to be concerned than Republicans or Independents.
– Most Americans (79%) have engaged in some form of social distancing.
– Democrats are more likely to have done so then Independents (78%) or Republicans (73%).
– A majority (60%) have been impacted by a COVID-19 related cancellation or closure.
– So far, the disease itself remains a new story for most, with only 13% knowing someone who has been quarantined with, exposed to, or diagnosed with COVID-19.
